Man arrested after police pursuit

0502 Chad NicholsJackson County, Ore. — Medford Police have arrested a man who they say lead numerous law enforcement agencies on a pursuit before crashing his car, and running from officers on foot.

It all began around 12:30 Monday morning, when a Medford officer attempted to pull over a white Ford Crown Victoria for a traffic violation.

Authorities say the driver, later identified by police as 46-year-old Chad Nichols, didn’t pull over, and Medford Police did not pursue the car.

A short time later, a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the car driving at a high rate of speed southbound on I-5. Deputies attempted to pull the car over, and a pursuit began.

Deputies followed Nichols to the first Ashland exit, where the car got off the interstate at milepost 19.

The pursuit then led back to Phoenix, where the car crashed on Coleman Creek Road. Officers from the Ashland and Phoenix police departments, as well as the Oregon State Police, were also on scene. Medford Police say Nichols fled the vehicle after it crashed, and was found about 40 minutes later hiding in thick brush.

Nichols was taken into custody on numerous charges, including attempting to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering, and an outstanding warrant.
