Man shot, killed while trying to break into CHP officer’s home

Redding, Calif. – A man was shot while trying to break into an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer’s home in Redding.

The Redding Police Department said officers were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of Country Oak Drive around 3:00 Sunday afternoon.

A homeowner told police someone was prowling in the area and tried to get into a residence through the back door. Officers searched the area, but did they did not immediately locate anyone.

Police said while officers were still in the neighborhood, dispatchers received a second call reporting a person who was trying to kick in the front door of a home down the street.

According to RPD, the homeowner who called was an off-duty CHP officer. He reported he had shot the intruder who was breaking into his home.

Once officers arrived on scene, they found the CHP officer inside his home still holding the suspect at gun-point.

RPD said the suspect was transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. He later died from his injuries.

Police will not release the name of the suspect at this time pending notification of next of kin.

As the investigation in ongoing, the name of the CHP officer will not be released at this time.

According to the Redding Record Searchlight, CHP would not comment on the incident, and Redding Police Department investigators did not return a phone call seeking more information.
