Medford City Hall to be remodeled after police leave

Medford police plan to be officially moved into their new station by this Friday.

Now that police are moving out of city hall, city management hopes to remodel the space to make it more user friendly for the community.

“We’re a full service… ready to go at the new department,” Chief Deputy Brett Johnson said.

Patrol and the records division are up and running at Medford’s new police station as their move continues.

Deputy Chief Brett Johnson says they are ahead of schedule with the move and South Ivy street should be open again to traffic by the end of this week.

“Everybody’s so motivated to move into this great new building with new features and everybody’s just stoked,” Johnson said.

But what is happening with the space that police have occupied since 1968?

“I hope that we remodel the space as economically as possible but also to make it more welcoming to the public,” Medford City Manager Brian Sjothun said.

Beyond improving what the city manager calls a space full of concrete walls, he sees it as an opportunity to make things more efficient.

“Moving those services that the people come to city hall to access may be down to the first floor so that they don’t have to go up to the second or third floor,” Sjothun said.

They plan to send out a proposal at the end of this month to hire an architectural firm that will look at the space available.

City management will be presenting estimates for remodeling costs to the city council and budget committee in Spring of 2017.

City management wants to be clear that police are still working their regular shifts as they move into their new facility.
