Medford council okays funding for police body cams

Medford, Ore. — Medford police officers could be equipped with body cameras as soon as March. The city council unanimously approving a $145,000 contract Thursday, to provide 85 cameras to the city’s cops and code enforcement officers.

Medford police say it will be one more tool for the force and one more layer of transparency.

“We certainly wanted to be responsive to what’s happening nationwide,” Lieutenant Scott Clauson says, “and I think the public is ready for us to have body cams, our officers are also ready.”

Officers will wear the cameras on glasses, a holster on their shoulder, or on their uniform. All officers will go through training before implementing them on the streets. MPD says they expect to have them in use in 60 to 90 days.
