Missing Northern California hiker found dead

1128-kidder-creek-hikerSiskiyou County, Calif. – A missing hiker was found dead along a northern California trail on Monday, November 28th, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

SCSO said 55-year-old Quartz Valley resident Kevin Rickey was reported missing around 5:00 Monday morning. Family told deputies Rickey was hiking on Sunday and did not return home once the sun went down.

Deputies said a search was initiated, but before crews were deployed Rickey was found dead by a citizen less than two miles from the Kidder Creek trailhead.

According to the sheriff’s office, the area is currently covered with snow and ice. Search and rescue crews are currently working to recover the remains of Rickey.

Sheriff John Lopey said, “There is always a sense of sadness and catastrophic loss when our Department’s Search and Rescue team fails to find a fellow lost citizen alive. On behalf of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and partner agencies involved in the search operation, I would like to extend our sincere condolences and prayers to Mr. Rickey, his family, and friends in the aftermath of his tragic death.”

The sheriff’s office said the cause of death is still under investigation, which is “routine in these types of situations.” Anyone with information is encouraged to call SCSO at 530-841-2900.
