Alameda County, Cal. (NBC News) — Nine passengers were injured Monday when a commuter train derailed in northern California, plunging one car into a swollen creek.
Union Pacific believes a mudslide swept a tree onto the tracks, causing the Ace Commuter rail car to tumble 50 feet into the cold waters of the Alameda Creek.
The crash occurred in Niles Canyon, about 40 miles southeast of San Francisco. 214 passengers were on board at the time.
“It’s a minor miracle, it’s rugged it’s rural, it’s cold, it’s dark and for the people that are on the train, they may not be dressed to be out in 45 degree weather at the time, in kind of a misty fog,” said Sgt. J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department.
