MURA talks possible new city pool

OLD HAWTHORNE POOLMedford, Ore.– With the start of summer just around the corner, some Medford City Councilors say it’s time to consider a new public pool.

Hawthorne Park had a pool that was drained and shut down in 2011.  In 2012 a proposal to rebuild it was voted against.

Medford City Council member and MURA or Medford Urban Renewal Board member, Kevin Stine says the city knows there is a need for a new city pool, but the issue comes down to funding.

Stine says money in the MURA budget has been depleted by recent city enhancement projects like the commons.

“That money is gone over the 30 years,” says Stine.  “We haven’t decided yet but what we can do is extend MURA and that will give us somewhere between $10 and $15 million.”

Even if MURA is extended, Stine says that a new city pool isn’t the only project on MURA’s radar.  He says there have also been discussions about building more affordable housing,  parking structures and new parks.
