Neighbor not surprised by Tuesday’s shooting

Medford, Ore. — On a beautiful Wednesday morning in West Medford Yurice Alfaro said she and her young sister and nephews will play inside.

“We used to go to the park a lot,” she said. “We used to go outside and lay down in the grass but now it’s not even safe to go outside and do that.”

Tuesday night just after 8:00 Alfaro said they heard gunshots from out in front of their home on Prune Street. At first she thought it was fireworks until she heard a man screaming in pain. Then came the knock on the door. It was a man telling them to call 911. Alfaro and her older siblings ran out to help.

Not even 24 hours later Alfaro said those few minutes are playing over and over in her head. Others who live on the street said the drive by shooting so close to home isn’t surprising.

“Back in the day we used to be able to leave our doors unlocked and windows open in our car and our front door wide open and go to bed and now days you just can’t do that,” neighbor Levi Carrithers said.

Carrithers said he sees gang activity often. But it’s not something he’ll let affect his every day life.

Medford Police Department has extra patrols in the area just in case of any gang retaliation. If you know anything about the shooting you’re urged to contact MPD.
