New tax exemption proposal

Jackson County, Ore. — A new proposal could eliminate property taxes for spouses of fallen police officers and fire fighters in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to put the tax exemption on the November ballot. Commissioner Colleen Roberts called the proposal a small token of appreciation for someone that’s made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It’s a really positive thing that can be done for surviving families. It’s probably the hardest time in your life to lose your spouse,” said Roberts.

Commissioner Roberts hopes people will weigh in at a public hearing at their offices on Aug. 17. The proposal will be added to the ballot for the general election in November.

If voters say yes, the exemption will go into effect on Dec. 8.
