Fire near Howard Prairie Lake prompts evacuation order

UPDATE: 9:23 – Crews have updated that the Grizzley Creek Fire has grown to 300 to 350 acres. ODF has assembled 150 personnel for night operations.

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. – Crews are tackling a new wildfire that started about a mile north of Howard Prairie Lake.

The Oregon Department of Forestry said the Grizzly Creek Fire was first detected shortly after 2:00 p.m. Friday. By 4:00 p.m., it was estimated to be about 150 acres in size.

According to ODF, four helicopters and one air tanker are fighting the fire.

Just before 5:00 p.m. Friday, Dead Indian Memorial Road was closed to eastbound traffic at milepost 17 at the intersection with Hyatt Prairie Road. Westbound traffic will be stopped near the junction of Dead Indian Memorial Road and Forest Service Road 37. The public is urged to avoid the area.

A Level 2 evacuation (Be Set) order has been made for all campgrounds around Howard Prairie Lake. All reservations for campgrounds around the lake have been canceled, ODF said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
