Newport H.S. senior crashes through school barricades, nearly strikes pedestrians

0909-yanez-gomezNewport, Ore. – A vehicle crashed through Newport High School’s traffic barricades and nearly struck multiple pedestrians as it drove through the area at a high rate of speed, according to police.

According to Newport Police, a school resource officer observed a blue Daewoo sedan speeding toward the school around 12:45 Thursday afternoon. The vehicle was not braking as it approached a nearby intersection. It crashed through the barricades on NE Eads Street between Newport High School’s main and west campuses. It then continued southbound, nearly striking multiple pedestrians.

NPD said the officer on scene ran to his patrol vehicle and tried catch up to the reckless vehicle. Due to the high rate of speed and debris, the officer was not able to overtake the car before it fled the area.

After an investigation, police identified the driver as 18-year-old Newport High School senior Alexis “David” Yanez Gomez.

Yanez Gomez turned himself in to police around roughly 2 hours after the incident. He was lodges at the Lincoln County Jail on charges of reckless endangering, reckless driving, hit and run vehicle-property, and criminal mischief.

Officers said Yanez Gomez did not seem to be impaired at the time of the crash.
