PARIS, France (CNN) – It was a tragic day in Paris and for many around the world as flames ripped through the historic Notre Dame cathedral.
Social media reports of the fire spread quickly as huge crowds of onlookers watched in shock.
Officials say some 400 firefighters are on the scene.

The church’s spire fell, followed by the collapse of the roof
French President Macron Tweeted, “Notre Dame of Paris in flames. Emotion for a whole nation. Thoughts for all Catholics and for all French. Like all our countrymen, I’m sad tonight to see this
part of us burn.”
The effects were felt around the globe. President Trump said, “I’ve been there and I’ve seen it and there’s no cathedral. I think I could say there’s probably no cathedral in the world like it. It’s a terrible scene.
The Paris prosecutor has opened an investigation into the fire.
The cathedral was built in the 13th century and is one of the most well-known places of worship in the world, bringing around 13 million visitors every year.
Much of the cathedral was covered in scaffolding, as Notre Dame was undergoing renovations.
