Number of job openings soars to record high

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC) – There is good news on the jobs front. The Labor Department says the number of job openings soared to a record high in December.

Employers posted 7.3 million job openings, a jump of 2.4 percent. That’s the most since the agency started keeping records nearly two decades ago.

Experts say the jump in December suggests hiring will likely remain robust.

On average, job postings are typically filled within one to two months.

The number of available jobs is now far greater than the number of unemployed Americans. That could signal stronger wage gains in the coming months.

Average hourly pay rose 3.2 percent in January from last year.
