Officer involved shooting closes part of Grants Pass Parkway

1013-grants-pass-officer-involved-shootingUpdate (10/13 11:53 p.m.) – The Grants Pass Department of Public safety said around 7:30 Thursday morning they received numerous report of an erratic driver in the area of Walmart and Terry Lane.

Police said the vehicle reportedly hit several vehicles and drove into an oncoming lane on the Parkway overpass, where it crashed. When officers arrived, they found a man inside the vehicle armed with a large knife.

Officers said after unsuccessful negotiations, the suspect exited the vehicle with the knife and approached officers. Tasers and bean-bag rounds were deployed but were ineffective.

GPDPS said as the man continued walking he was fired upon by officers and killed.

Oregon State Police are investigating. No officers were hurt in the confrontation. Their names will not be released at this time.

Grants Pass police have not confirmed the identity of the man that was killed.

Grants Pass, Ore.- An officer involved shooting shut down the Grants Pass Parkway (Hwy. 199) Thursday morning. The closure affected the stretch of road between F and M Streets.

The incident was reported about 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Details of the events leading up to the shooting were not immediately available.

Detours were set up around the closure and were expected to be in place for several hours due to a law enforcement investigation.
