Oregon foster care crisis

shoes blurry kidsOregon — A new report reveals Oregon’s child welfare system is failing in every area possible.

The federal study released this week shows only a little more than half of abuse and neglect allegation investigations were completed on time, and in the most serious cases where a check-in is required within 24-hours, the state fulfilled that requirement less than 63% of the time.

The Executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Center says the findings are disappointing, but point to a much broader issue.

“It’s like any other field,” Tammi Pitzen says, “your return is going to be based on your investment.” Pitzen adds, “we’re not the only state struggling with this, but we have to do better, the stakes are too high.”

Pitzen says that the system can only enforce the laws and policies that are in place, and if those aren’t working then the community needs to work to change them.
