‘Out of the Darkness’ walk looks to raise awareness about suicide

MEDFORD, Ore.– Registration is open for an upcoming walk to raise awareness about suicide and provide support for those in need.

The Out of the Darkness Southern Oregon Walk, which has been held in Central Point in previous years, is moving to Medford after organizers say they needed a larger area to hold the walk.

This year, on September 15, the walk will take place at The Commons at Pear Blossom Park where vendors and booths will be set up to connect people to local services that can help those whose lives have been touched by suicide.

“It’s a huge issue here and we’re just trying to fight that taboo of talking about it so that people know that, ‘Hey, there are resources and here they are all in a line at our event,'” said Ashley Cay, walk chair for the southern Oregon walk.

This year, organizers have set a goal of raising $25,000 which will go to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention to help fund the organizations efforts for educational programs and support for families and survivors.

People can sign up for the walk or donate to the cause through the the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention website here.
