Over 1 million gallons of sewage discharged into Lake Siskiyou tributary

Mt. Shasta, Calif. – An estimated 1,315,000 gallons of sewage has been discharged into a creek that flows through the city of Mt. Shasta, California. Another 1,315,000 gallons of storm runoff water escaped along with the sewage.

Siskiyou County Public Health said the untreated wastewater was accidentally discharged Wednesday into Cold Creek because of a sewer line break south of Hatchery Lane, west of Interstate 5. Cold Creek flows into Lake Siskiyou.

The public is advised to avoid direct contact with water from Lake Siskiyou and Cold Creek until further notice.

Officials said due to the remote location of the break, repairs could take up to two weeks to complete.
