R.V. businessman sentenced in assault case

Medford, Ore. — A well-known businessman is sentenced to a month in jail for assaulting a local NBC Dateline producer. It’s a story NBC5 has been covering since the incident occurred in June.

Louis Mahar of “Mahar Brothers Construction” pleaded no contest Friday to charges of assault and harassment. Mahar was charged with misdemeanor assault and two counts of harassment for harassing Anna Bishop at a party, and then assaulting her husband Shane Bishop, resulting in serious injuries which included a fractured vertebrae and torn rotator cuff.

In court Friday, Mahar briefly apologized. Bishop says he’s glad the case is behind them.

“I have never physically hurt anyone in my life,” Louis Mahar read in court, “I hope the court can show some leniency in my sentence on count 1.”

“We’re very grateful to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for their commitment to pursing the truth, and we’re glad this is finally over,” Shane Bishop told NBC5 after the sentencing.

Mahar is scheduled to report for jail on January 3rd, but he is eligible to apply for home detention. In addition to his jail sentence, Mahar will serve 2 years probation.

The court is seeking several thousand dollars in restitution for the Bishops.
