Update: Rain stalls clean up of large rock slide on Galice Road

GLALICE SLIDE 2Update: Crews advise the rain is stalling efforts to clear the landslide on Galice road near Merlin.

Josephine County Public Works said the time table for clearing the slide is indefinite.

Public Works said crews have had a third of the dry time they needed to clear the debris. The slide has been blocking traffic for nearly two weeks.

GALICE SLIDE 1Galice, Ore.–  Rainy weather is responsible for one of the biggest rock slides public workers have seen in years near Galice.

500 cubic yards of rock and dirt is blocking traffic on Galice Road about a mile downriver of the Galice Resort and 20 miles northwest of Grants Pass.

Josephine County Public Works Director Rob Brandes says the slope will be assessed today.

Best case scenario, the clean up could be finished by the end of the day Wednesday, but it’s dangerous work.

“There is another similar amount that is kind of hanging up there waiting to go,” says Brandes.  “It’s enough that if it hit our equipment operator it could push the whole thing over the side of the hill.”

Brandes says the half mile closure is forcing nearby residents to use Wolf Creek Road,  a 20 minute detour until the slide is cleared.
