2 Million dollar grant secured for veterans housing in Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A two million dollar grant has been awarded to build a veterans housing project in Klamath Falls.

Diana Otero of the Klamath County Authority says there’s a high demand for vet housing in Klamath Falls…

“There’s a huge need for veterans.  There’s over 8,000 in the community, and no housing designed specifically for veterans.”

Thanks to a two million dollar grant from Oregon Housing and Community Services, construction plans are now underway.

“We hope to break ground in April.”  Explains Otero.  “Be finished in late September, starting to lease and have ten veterans living here by this time next year.”

The project will be build on a property near Esplanade and Michigan.

“There will be 5 duplexes, for 10 people.”  Notes Otero.  “Plus, then we’re building a manager’s unit which will have a community room on the side of it.”

Navy veteran Ernest Furrey says he’s looking forward to having new neighbors…

“I think that’s going to be quite nice.”

The name of the facility?

‘Victory Commons’.

“It was a victory for the community, it was a victory for the veterans.”  Says Diana Otero.

The grant was awarded at the same time as Access of Jackson County was given 1.7 million dollars for a 17 unit veterans facility.

The Medford housing will be known as ‘Victory Place’.
