Car and train crash crosses state line

Malin, Ore – Police say a car hit a moving train in California early Monday morning, which pushed the wreck into Oregon.

The crash happened at about 7:30 A.M. at a railroad crossing just south of Malin.

“It sounds like it was very foggy, and the roads were icy.”  Said Trooper Michael Benson of the Oregon State Police.  “She was unable to stop in time, and collided with a train that was crossing.”

State Police say Driver Kari Wright and two juveniles from Tulelake were headed west, and struck a northbound train.

The accident happened on Stateline Road.  One side of the road is in Oregon, the other side of the road is in California.

Police say the woman may have actually veered left heading into California, where she collided with the train – which then brought her back into Oregon.

Trooper Benson says it appears that safety features at the crossing were working properly…

“The crossing was working correctly.  The lights were flashing, and the bar was down.”

The three people in the car suffered only minor injuries.

“She may have a broken bone.”  Noted Trooper Benson.  “But relatively minor considering they collided with a train.”

Police say the engineer was not aware that a car had hit his train, and continued along his route.

Rail crews are working to fix the damaged crossing.
