Church roof torn off in Klamath Falls windstorm

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Strong winds tore the roof off of a church in Klamath Falls late Thursday afternoon.

Pastor David Kirby says the wind hit hard and fast. “The wind got up, and took the roof with it.”

Heavy winds ripped the roof off of the Fairhaven Church of God shortly after four Thursday afternoon.

“All of a sudden we heard a whistling sound,” recalled church member John Crowell. “And then we heard a big crash.”

“Kind of reminds me of the tornadoes in Alabama,” said Pastor Kirby. “Took all the roof, and it was gone.”

The former Fairhaven School was sold to the church in 2012 by the Klamath County School District.

“So I know the roof is at least six years old,” said Kirby. “Because it was here when we bought the building.”

Pastor Kirby adds the emergency forced cancellation of a youth service and Bible study Thursday night. “We were advised by the fire department not to have service because of the debris.”

Kirby says the building has since been cleared for use, estimates are being taken for roof repairs.

“We’ve put on roofs before,” John Crowell said. “But this is not a job for us.”

But as Pastor Kirby points out, luckily no one was injured.

No dollar estimate of damage has yet been made.

The Fairhaven Church of God has a congregation of about 80 people.
