Coast Guard trainees rescue passengers of sinking boat

CHARLESTON, Ore. – Two Coast Guard boat crews in Charleston, Oregon for training got some real life action after a boat overturned, putting three people in a life threatening situation.

The call came in Saturday morning of a boat flipped near the north jetty at the Coos River entrance.

Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Coos Bay were in the area for training and issued a quick response.

Crew members launched both of their 47-foot motor life boats to rescue two people on top of the overturned boat.

Another crew located  the third person clinging to a buoy.

All three people were taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. The Coast Guard says they were not wearing life jackets or protective clothing.
