Klamath County Fire District #1 equipment levy

Klamath County Fire District #1 is making an emergency call to voters, requesting a 2 million dollar equipment levy.

Fire Chief John Spradley says the department is using fire trucks and ambulances that are 10 years past their prime…

“We’re looking to replace our entire front line fleet – which is 5 engines, and 5 ambulances, and also one command vehicle.”

A 5 year levy to fund that 2 million dollar effort will be on the November ballot.

If passed, property taxes on a $100,000 home would go up by $16 a year.

Chief Spradley asked Klamath County Chamber of Commerce director Charles ‘Chip’ Massie to survey their members.

“And so far, our membership has said ‘yeah, we think the chamber should endorse it.”  Said Massie.

Spradley says it has cost nearly $400,000 to repair aging equipment over the past 5 years.

Spradley says the average fire engine in his department is over 21 years old, with over 150,000 miles.

The average mileage on department ambulances is over 190,000 miles.
