Laser targets Southwest flight

NC_laserarrest1120_700x394Calif. — (KCRA) As a Southwest flight prepared to land at Sacramento International Airport Wednesday night, a high-powered green laser caught the eye of a pilot.

“It’s a great risk to passengers and people on the ground,” California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Harvey said. “If there is an aircraft collision, it could be devastating.”

CHP sent a helicopter up to search for the suspect in Solano County. They too were hit by the green laser. Investigators followed the car and arrested David Fanning. He now faces felony charges.

“Laser strikes can be extremely dangerous for pilots due to the fact that it can temporarily blind them,” Harvey explains.
