Speed limits increase to 65 on several eastern Oregon highways

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A law raising the speed limit from 55 to 65 miles an hour took effect Tuesday morning on several highways east of the Cascades.

One of those highways was highway 97 north of Klamath Falls. The speed increase will shave about 13 minutes driving time off the 140 mile trip between Klamath Falls and Bend. Chris Otto of Bend said, “The traffic moves along anyway, so to match the speed limit to the speed the traffic’s already going is probably a good thing.”

Those going over the 65 mile an hour limit could get a ticket with a $110 fine.

A national 55 mile an hour speed limit was put in place in 1974 in an effort to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
