Suicide prevention event this weekend in Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls, Ore. — Two Oregonians take their own lives every day, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control.

The battle to prevent suicide hits close to home for Agnes McKeen of Klamath Falls. “About 3 years ago I lost my son Harrison to suicide at 16 years old.”

McKeen is helping to organize this weekend’s second annual Just Talk Suicide Prevention event at the Klamath County Fairgrounds.

Over 300 people attended last year’s event.

“Last year’s was better than I ever could have expected,” McKeen said. “We had a great turnout, a great reception from the folks who attended the event.”

McKeen has a semicolon tattoo—a globally recognized suicide prevention symbol.

“It represents a place in a sentence where the sentence could have ended,” explained McKeen. “But the author chose to continue, and the same for one’s life.”

McKeen believes that if just one life can be saved, her efforts have been worth it.  “Every life matters and that is our goal.”

The Friends of Harrison Mahan Just Talk Suicide Prevention Event will be taking place at the Klamath County Fairgrounds this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4.
