Suspected Norovirus continues to spread in Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Health officials in Klamath County say a suspected Norovirus has now hit over 150 kids over the past 3 weeks.

An outbreak of suspected Norovirus is continuing to spread in Klamath Falls.

“Some schools are subsiding.”  Notes Klamath County Public Health Director Marilynn Sutherland.  “And numbers are increasing in others.”

The stomach bug was first reported at Conger School, a city school where at least 75 kids were hit by the virus.

Public Health Nurse Katie Singleton reports that new cases have more than doubled that number…

“We had a total of 50 in the city, and possibly 30 in county.”

Singleton adds that health advisories in English and Spanish are now being sent to county school parents…

“We have a sibling that goes to one school, and another school, and we bounce through the county line.”

Marilynn Sutherland notes that health officials are working to confirm in the bug is Norovirus, as suspected…

“The state lab informed us today that they expect to have results to share with us Friday.”

Thorough hand washing, and staying home when you’re sick are the most effective ways to prevent spread of the disease.

Norovirus symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The virus is spread through food, water, and close contact with infected people, or things they have touched.
