Vandals go on shooting spree in Chiloquin

Chiloquin, Ore. – Vandals went on a shooting spree late Monday night in Chiloquin.

Bill Wilkins of the Chiloquin Community Center learned early Tuesday morning that a door to the public library had been shot out.

“I got a call, I think around one o’clock from the local fire chief, Mike Cook.”  Recalled Wilkins.  “And I came over here, and saw that the door had been shot out.  A lot of glass.”

Klamath County Sheriff Chris Kaber says as many as three vandals were firing shots from a small caliber rifle.

Kaber noted the vandals also fired shots at two moving vehicles by the Williamson River Bridge.  “I believe that both the semi, the commercial vehicle, and at least one other vehicle was occupied when it was struck by a bullet.  No injuries.”

Sheriff Kaber says three possible suspects have been identified.  “We have some partial, I’ll call it ‘reasonable suspicion’ about who we think it is, but it’s not enough for us to act on it right now.”

Despite the vandalism, Bill Wilkins says he still feels safe in Chilolquin – as long as some precautions are taken.

“We feel very safe.”  Wilkins said.  “I wouldn’t park a real nice car downtown here, and let it sit all night – especially on a weekend night.”

Police have not released the names of the three possible suspects.

Chiloquin was hit hard in July of 2015, when vandals broke windows, ransacked an art gallery, and set a pickup truck on fire outside of a market.

Three juveniles were eventually arrested and charged.
