Residents affected by Gap Fire allowed home

0901 Gap FireHorse Creek, Ca., — Some good news for residents in Horse Creek, all mandatory evacuations have been lifted.

There are just two advisory evacuations left for the Hamburg community and the east end of Lad road.

The fire is also now 65% contained.

“You just feel like you can let out a deep breath now, like okay, it’s gonna be okay,” said one resident, Anna Covington-Garcia.

Residents affected by the Gap Fire can sleep easier now that they are back in their homes.

“I feel so relieved, happy, I’m looking forward to unpacking”

Even through the mandatory evacuations, Anna Covington-Garcia and her husband stayed in their home.

“We decided we would stay until the very very last moment.”

They had faith the fire fighters would save their house, and they did.

“We lost 20 acres of land. but no structures, no animals, no property, we were lucky.”

Nancy Shaffer’s land was also damaged.

“The rest of it is pretty well burned, I lost fruit trees, a water tank, a 2500 gallon water tan but I’m lucky.”

Though both women live in different communities in the affected areas, both say they are more than pleased with how the fire has been handled.

“These firefighters have just put their lives on the line for us.”, said Shaffer.

“I’m just grateful for the firemen that have been here, like I said they were on our fire within an hour.”, said Covington-Garcia.

The U.S. Forest Service says though the fire looks good right now, things can always change.

Crews will most likely stay out there until a season ending rain.
