Sand bags available in Ashland

Ashland, Ore., — After snow and ice covered the Rogue Valley over the last few days, a rain storm is now causing possible flooding in certain areas – like Ashland.

“We have people out right now looking at the storm drains, keeping an eye on some of the areas that we know are susceptible to heavier rains. So yeah we’re keeping a close eye on things, and keeping in touch with the weather service.” said Public Works Superintendent, Mike Morrison.

With that in mind, the city put out sand and sand bags — available to public for free.

“This morning we were seeing some pretty heavy rains and there was still some snow on the ground, so we had some request for sand bags, so we went ahead and made them available.” said Morrison.

Some people were taking full advantage — like Rick Ferguson.

“Just filling up some sand bags, we got a rising creek up in Ashland.”

While it wasn’t flooding in the area yet, Ferguson says being prepared is key.

“Looking ok but gonna do some precautionary bagging.”

Even with the work involved, he says it’s hard to turn down free supplies.

“We just recently learned about it, we have a friend who works down here and he told us, so yeah it’ s nice to save a few bucks.”

A cost that’s worth it to Ferguson — with a weather system moving in that could bring a lot of water to the region.
