In a column published in the New York Times, Sen. Merkley said, “Bernie Sanders is boldly and fiercely addressing the biggest challenges facing our country.”
Sen. Merkley outlines some of those challenges, saying one problem is the economy has been rigged to make a fortunate few very well off, while leaving most Americans struggling to keep up.
According to the article, Sen. Merkley believes economic and political power have become more concentrated, and special interest groups have exercised an ever-tighter grip on American politics.
Sen. Merkley notes that Sanders has an uphill battle ahead of him, but says thanks to his leadership and his willingness to stand up to the powers that be have created a grass-roots movement of supporters. He goes on to say, “It is time to recommit ourselves to that vision of a country that measures our nation’s success not at the boardroom table, but at kitchen tables across America. Bernie Sanders stands for that America, and so I stand with Bernie Sanders for president.”
