Shooting near the White House prompts lockdown

Washington, D.C. (NBC) — Man was shot this afternoon near the White House grounds. Security quickly responded in and around the White House forcing a lockdown.

A witness saw a white male with a gun approaching police. After commands to stop, the witness said the suspect did not comply and was then shot.

President Obama was not in the white house at the time.

Larry Samples, a witness to the scene said, “He was carrying a gun. It was silver, a silver gun in clear sight. Walked through the fence line. They immediately tried to stop him and said… came up to him yelled multiple times ‘stop, stop, stop.’ He kept ignoring them, ‘drop your gun.’ He walked toward the officers and he kept on walking in refused to stop and the officer after they approached about the third in, they shot him.”

The lockdown included the closure of nearby streets.
