SOU student film festival

Ashland, Ore., — Some SOU students are hoping to take home prizes for their work in the school’s student film festival.

The film festival kicks off tomorrow night and the students we spoke with couldn’t be happier about what they’ve accomplished, whether  they win or not.

For the past ten years SOU students have been producing films and entering them into their own festival.

But planners of the event say this will be the biggest year yet.

“We have a huge selection of student films this year, twice the number we had last year and we have a lot more community involvement and engagement and we’re expecting a huge turn out this year.” said Jimmy Leavens.

The festival will feature 21 short films from 17 student film makers. It is an entirely student run event organized by the SOU Film Club and the “Film Festival Programming and Promotion” class.

“I think it’s really fun to make a big deal about all the student films going because it really encourages student film makers to challenge themselves, and make films to the best of their ability.” said Alison Hoffman.

Student directors say having their film chosen is an honor enough, winning an award would just be an added bonus.

“It’s just a great joy to be able to share something I’ve created with other people. To win an award would just be the icing on top of the cake.” said Michael Bryant.

The event is free and open to the public. It starts tomorrow at 6 PM at the Varsity Theater in Ashland.

There will be an awards ceremony afterwards at the Ashland Elks Lodge at 8:15.
