Speed limits for trucks on I-5 could increase

Salem, Ore. – An Oregon Department of Transportation panel is discussing the implications of raising the speed limit for trucks on certain sections of Interstate 5.

According to ODOT, the Oregon Speed Zone Review Panel is looking into raising the speed limit for trucks from 55 mph to 60 mph on specific stretches of I-5.

ODOT began an investigation into raising the speed limit in November of 2016. The areas under review are anywhere south of Portland where truck speeds are 55 and passenger vehicle speeds are 65.

After reports are made and public meetings are held, the panel will make their recommendations to the Oregon Transportation Commission, who are expected to make a final decision in August of 2017.

The panel will hold public meetings during the process, including one on Wednesday, March 22 5:30 p.m. at the Santo Community Center (701 N Columbus Ave.) in Medford.

If you can’t attend the meeting, you can provide input at [email protected].
