Spike in teachers losing licenses for sexual misconduct with students

Oregon — Allegations against a teacher at Crater High School. Jeffrey Zundel was arrested Monday, suspected of sexual conduct with a student. He teaches world studies at the school’s Renaissance Academy, but has been placed on administrative leave.

Parents and teachers were shocked to hear the news, but a report from Portland NBC affiliate KGW shows more and more teachers are being penalized for sexual conduct with students. In 2014, 15 Oregon teachers lost their licenses for it. That’s a record number up from five in 2011.

A spokesperson for the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission says they won’t have access to the 2015 stats for another month, but the KGW report found many of the cases involved social media including Facebook, Snapchat, and text messaging.

No court documents have been filed in Zundel’s case yet. In a news release Central Point School District 6 said all staff is trained in sexual misconduct.
