Stone Fire continues to spread in northern California

MODOC COUNTY, Calif. – A wildfire burning in northern California has grown to over 5,000 acres.

The Stone Fire is one of three fires ignited by lightning storms in the Modoc National Forest on August 15. The fire, west of Yellowjacket Spring and south of County Road 84, was first estimated to be about 200 acres.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Stone Fire spread rapidly in heavy fuels. By August 17, it covered 5,445 acres.

With extremely dry conditions expected to continue, firefighters will prioritize structure protection along Highways 139 and 84. Dozer lines will continue to be created to slow the fire’s spread to the southeast.
