Super Bowl safety: drunken driver and party host can be liable in accident

Medford, Ore. — More than 110-million people are expected to tune in for Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, but police are issuing a warning to anyone hosting a party. If your guest is involved in a drunken driving accident, you can be just as liable as the driver.

“The criminal penalties may not transfer to the person hosting the party, but the civil penalties do,” Lt. Mike Budreau said. “So the victims that the drunk driver hit could go after the person driving, but also the person that was hosting the party.”

Medford Police, as well as other agencies around the Rogue Valley will have extra patrols out on Sunday, canvassing neighborhoods.

“We anticipate that there will be plenty of people driving impaired that night, so we are having additional personnel on staff, dedicated just to that,” Lt. Budreau said.

Police suggest that if you are hosting a party, keep an eye on your guests, and make sure everyone has enough to eat. If your guests aren’t able to drive, make sure they have a safe way to get home.
