Mt. Ashland sees banner year, encourages spring breakers to hit the slopes

Mt. Ashland, Ore. — The snow was coming down on Mt. Ashland Monday, adding to what is already being described as one of the best years the mountain has had in the past decade. Now that most Rogue Valley students are officially on spring break, Mt. Ashland officials are hoping you’ll spend your vacation on the slopes.

“It’s nice to be off of school,” Gabe Lee said, a Sophomore at North Medford High School.

Lee is normally in the classroom on a Monday, but instead, he and his brother had the slopes of Mount Ashland practically to themselves.

“I would expect more people, because a lot of people have the days off, especially during spring break,” Lee said.

While it’s not what he’d expect, Lee isn’t complaining.

“We’re going to see if we can go up to Ariel, do a couple jumps, you know, the usual.”

Despite the week off of school, and the powdery conditions, there wasn’t a lot of people on the slopes on Monday. As it turns out, the lack of skiers and snowboarders on the mountain isn’t that unusual.

“During this time of the season, numbers do taper off,” said Hiram Towle, the General Manager of Mt. Ashland.

Towle says even with a slow start to spring break, the mountain is having their best season in years.

“Over the last ten years, the mountain has not performed to this level, and a lot of it has to do with the snow,” Towle said.

Officials say you can help keep the mountain open longer this year just by going. Right now, the last projected day at the season is April 10th. For more information, click here.
