Trump selects Pence as running mate

0714 Pence(NBC) — NBC News has learned that Donald Trump is choosing Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate.

Pence flew to the New York area Thursday ahead of a planned Friday morning joint appearance in Manhattan.

Pence was a congressman for more than a decade before being elected governor of Indiana in 2012, and he’s been viewed as a frontrunner for the job for days.

Trump and Pence met privately Wednesday at the governor’s residence in Indianapolis after the two appeared at a rally the night before.

His supporters in the trump camp think Pence provides governing experience, knowledge of Capitol Hill, and conservative credentials to Trump’s ticket.

Trump’s decision comes after weeks of deliberations as a shortlist of candidates narrowed down to Pence, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and former speaker Newt Gingrich.
