U.S. tests new missile intercept system

Vandenburg A.F.B., Calif. (CNN) – The United States missile defense agency successfully intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile in a test Tuesday.

It was the first live test involving an ICBM for the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System.

Officials launched a test missile from the Marshall Islands and used sensors to track its movement.

The defense system analyzed the data and fired an interceptor missile from

Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

It struck the test ICBM over the Pacific Ocean.

Defense officials say the successful test is a major step in protecting the U.S. and its allies from ballistic missile threats.
