Ward family speaks out after murder arrests

Siskiyou County, Ca., — 62-year-old Jesse Ward’s body was found partially submerged in the Klamath River last week.

Investigators ruled his death a homicide.

On Monday two arrests were made in connection with the crime.

“I believe some family members are familiar with these people, because Mr. Corriea is from Hornbrook, and Mr. Smith gravitates in an and around the Yreka area and some of them also have Happy Camp ties.” said Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey.

Jerry Corriea is being charged with murder, and Mark Smith with accessory after the fact.

But the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office says more arrests could be coming.

“It’s possible. We’re questioning other people, we’ve questioned a lot of people that are associated with some of the suspects in the case.” said Lopey.

Ward’s sister – Beverly Chavez – says Corriea was living with him at the time, and thinks drugs may be a factor.

“I think he’s got a grudge against Jess and you know. Jesse like I said, he’s a very nice guy who takes everybody in, and I’m not sure what that other guys motive.” said Chavez.

She’s unsure if her brother knew Smith, but either way, Chavez says they’re seeking justice.

“They should be life in prison. Cause he can probably do it again you know. He’s really destroyed our family by taking our brother.”
