Man appears in mugshot with pet macaw

Washington County, Ore. – A Vernonia, Oregon man brought his 4-year-old macaw, named “Bird”, with him when he had to make an appearance in a Washington County courtroom on Monday.

The Oregonian reports 38-year-old Craig Buckner instructed the well trained macaw to stay outside in a tree while he went inside the courthouse. Buckner didn’t expect it to take too long, but a judge ordered Buckner into custody.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Bob Ray told the Oregonian, “He was very concerned about his bird. Mr. Buckner is very attached to this bird.”

Deputy Shoana McKelvey was concerned for the safety of the bird as well as Buckner’s mental well-being, so she tried to bring the bird inside. Dep. McKelvey wasn’t able to get the bird to come down, so she brought Buckner outside. The macaw flew right down.

The two took Bird inside where they snapped booking photos, both with and without the macaw.

According to the Oregonian, Dep. McKelvey was able to find a friend to take care of Bird while Buckner serves his sentence.
