Water testing underway at Klamath County Schools

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Water supplies are now being tested for lead and copper contamination at schools in Klamath County.

Klamath County Schools Maintenance worker Darin Martins took water samples Wednesday morning at Mazama High School. He said, “We’re taking five samples from each of our buildings, at drinking water sources – kitchen sinks, drinking fountains.”

This is the first time many of the schools have been tested for lead or copper beyond regular city water sampling.

“We’re not expecting to find anything,” noted Martins. “And speaking with city water, water quality is very good here – it’s not acidic, or caustic that would eat on the lead and the copper.”

Martins addsed that Spring Street Analytical is offering the testing to the district at half price, “They’ll probably have the results for us in probably 3 to 4 weeks.” Those results will then be released to the public.

More frequent testing is being conducted on water supplies at schools in Bonanza and Lost River, which rely on well water.

Klamath Falls City Schools will begin water testing later this month.
