JACKSON COUNTY, Ore — While it’s easy to get caught up in the holidays, it’s important to realize your decorations could be a fire hazard.
Buying pre-cut trees or cutting them down yourself, takes the water supply away from the tree, allowing them to dry up, making them a fire hazard.
Rural Metro Fire says, a tree typically has four weeks after being bought, before it’s a hazard. It says the earlier you get your tree, the worse it could be.
“So you’re getting very little time out of your Christmas tree, when you start by putting it up really early, you may not even make it to Christmas before that tree is a ticking time bomb.”
Rural Metro Fire says that putting water under your tree, may help slow the drying process, but it will not prevent it.
It also says that using old Christmas lights can pose a big hazard, and remember to turn off all that holiday decor, when you go to bed or leave the house.
