Ashland taking steps to control behavior downtown

Sequence 02Ashland, Ore., — After much discussion the city of Ashland is taking steps to try to control certain behavior downtown.

On Tuesday the city council voted to hire four part-time police cadets to patrol downtown during high tourist seasons.

Many of the people I spoke to today are in favor of the city taking action.
They’re calling it a step in the right direction, as many people, some of them homeless, are becoming a big problem.

Treehouse Books employee, Cynthia Salbato said “we definitely need more assistance here downtown, it can get a little rough at night and it’s nice for everybody to feel safe and protected on both sides.”

The city council also allocated $5,000 to spend on signs which would clarify what is and isn’t acceptable behavior.

No news yet on when the police will start patrolling, or when the signs will be put up.
