Oregon non-profit receives national recognition

Medford, Ore. — An Oregon non-profit is getting some big time national recognition.

The Start Making a Reader Today organization, also known as SMART has received the American Prize Literacy Award from the U.S. Library of Congress.

Julie Brimble, the Rogue Valley SMART Area Manager said it’s an honor reserved for only one organization in the country.

SMART staff say it’s clear, the program helps at-risk kids succeed.

“When you really take a step back and look at what we do, it’s so simple. We bring volunteers to elementary schools and preschools to spend time with kids reading and sharing books with them. I mean it can’t get any simpler than that. But we make a difference,” said Brimble.

SMART will receive $50,000 to buy books for kids.

People interested in becoming a volunteer can call the local SMART office at 541-734-5628, or visit their website www.getsmartoregon.org.
