Medford, Ore. — If you and your family are caught in an emergency situation, say an evacuation, what’s the best course of action
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new campaign to make sure people are ready if there’s an evacuation order for their area.
Andrea Carlson, spokesperson for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said people need to make an emergency kit, and make a plan about where their family and animals can go.
“In the event that something happens, who is going to be your contact person out of the area if there’s no phone service, if there’s no way to contact people,”
The sheriff’s office posts information on their Facebook page.
People can also sign up for Jackson County Citizen Alert through the Jackson County website.
What does each evacuation level mean
The following explanation of each evacuation level was taken from the Jackson County Sheriff’s “Be Ready, Be Set, Go” campaign.
Level 1 – Be ready.
Residents should be aware of the danger that exists in their area, monitor emergency services websites and local media outlets for information.
This is the time for preparation and precautionary movement of persons with special needs, mobile property and (under certain circumstances) pets and livestock. If conditions worsen, emergency services personnel may contact you via an emergency notification system.
Level 2 – Be set.
Residents should be able to leave at a moment’s notice. This level indicates there is significant danger to your area and residents should either voluntarily relocate to a shelter or with family/friends outside of the affected area, or if choosing to remain, to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Residents may have time to gather necessary items, but doing so is at their own risk.
A level 2 notification may be the only notice you receive.
Emergency services cannot guarantee that they will be able to notify you if conditions rapidly deteriorate.
Level 3 – GO!
If a level 3 evacuation notice is issues, it means residents must leave immediately.
Danger to your area is current or imminent. If you choose to ignore this advisement, you must understand that emergency services may not be available to assist you further.
Do not delay leaving to gather any belongings or make efforts to protect your home. This will be the last notice that you receive.
