Portland, Ore. – An Oregon teen is facing federal charges for possession of marijuana.
According to Portland NBC Affiliate KGW, 19-year-old Devontre Thomas said, “It’s a big deal when it comes to federal. That’s what scares me about it.”
Court documents allege Thomas knowingly and willingly possessed marijuana, a Schedule 1 controlled substance, in March of 2015. The case was filed on April of 2016 – roughly one year after the alleged crime took place.
KGW reports that according to his lawyer, Thomas didn’t have any marijuana in his possession, but he did admit paying another teenager $20 for some marijuana. Assistant Federal Public Defender Ruben Iniguez said investigators used the words “fragments,” “debris” and “remnants” to describe what they found on one of Thomas’ friends.
According to federal law, the amount of marijuana a person is carrying doesn’t matter. Possession of any amount is considered a misdemeanor.
