Update (08/15 4:55 p.m.) —  Yreka, Ca., — Edwin Lara, the man accused of killing 23-year-old Kaylee Sawyer along with numerous other crimes, has been charged with 4 counts of aggravated murder.

Bend NBC affiliate KTVZ reports the charges now make the death penalty a possibility.

Yreka, Calif. — The man accused of a string of crimes in both Oregon and California this week, makes his first court appearance.

Edwin Lara was arraigned on 9 felony counts, among the charges, attempted murder and several counts of kidnapping.

Police in Bend say the 31-year old Redmond resident killed 23-year old Kaylee Sawyer over the weekend, and then kidnapped a young woman in Salem on Monday.

Then on the run in California on Tuesday morning, Yreka police say Lara shot an elderly man at a hotel, and kidnapped a family at a gas station before finally being arrested after a 100-mile per hour chase south of Redding.

The Siskiyou County District Attorney’s office says the process to extradite Lara back to Oregon is not yet in the works.

“Right now he is in the state of California in a no bail situation, where unless that is released or changed he isn’t leaving our jail” said Assistant DA Joseph Allison.

Allison says in order for the extradition to happen, both district attorneys will have to work together, but Siskiyou County has no problem sending him back, as the charges are more severe in Oregon.

His pre trial conference is set for August 16th.
